coming next from adult only: the repress of one of the most sought-after 12s from the label back catalogue. ao19: “formula express – main course” was originally released in 2002 and featured guillaume la tortue, jef k and chris carrier.
this is actually some of the last records ever produced by the mysterious guillaume la tortue, one of the pioneer of electronic music in france, who’s quoted by laurent garnier in his infamous “electrochoc” book as one of his main influence back in the days.

the record opens on the “main course”: a classic tech-house number with a beautiful 909 beat and a tasteful use of various samples and fx all through the track. the funky vocals still sound fresh today but the secret here (as often with chris carrier’s related work) is the groove – the kind of groove that reminds you summer days in the park while the strong bass-line announces already the next track.
on the flip, “starter” stands out as the perfect dancefloor killer with an infernal groove and a real fat analog bass-line that will keep you moving whether you want it or not. add just a few crispy tribal percussions on a classic raw 909 beat and you got the simplest and dubbiest song of the record but also the most efficient dancefloorwise.
the last cut, “apple pie”, might be the deepest of them all. spacy melodies and trippy vocals in the background make you first feel like you’re chillin on some extraterrestrial beach far away from earth. it starts as a nice breakbeat building the atmosphere before slowly evolving into a more 4-4esque tech-house with the bass coming in only after a couple of minutes. even if the sound was resolutely analogic, the whole ep is extremely well produced with a special care for details. at many levels this three-track ep is a landmark in the label history.

“cliché’s principle” exhibits the two-sided aura of an artist long familiar with the cultivation of diy ethos: an effortless expulsion of playful immediacy and the unfolding of a musician well versed in unpretentious composition. lucy cliché’s five track ep for fleisch records is a jacking romp through 120-125bpm electro/new-beat, swooning through downcast ambience, lobotomised vocal samples and sweat-drenched hardware rhythms.
lucy’s musical oeuvre piles high, as a figure in the sydney underground for the past 15 years she has always explored sounds that playfully antagonize the status-quo, the dysfunctional no-wave approach of her band naked on the vague and the manipulated tape ambience of half high echo throughout cliché’s principle in the form of chorus buzzed synth chords, abstract drones and ethereal evocation. while there is the strong presence of a live veteran at work behind the machines, cliché’s principle holds five tracks produced purely with the intention of paving the dance-floor.

mantra makes an entry to finnish proform series with his raw and uncompromised four track acid ep called “the abyss”. after releases on bunker records, polybius trax, solar one music and abstract acid under the mantra alias craig stainton delivers four tracks of jackin pure acid techno madness in the veins of true underground. starting with “next culture” is a good introduction to pumping beats and a moaning 303 while “beat methods” takes a rougher and tougher angle to acid. just imagine yourself in a warehouse party in the morning jammin to some acid. on the b-side “the abyss” leads us to the deep end of the 303 or even to the bottom of the acid sea. “singularity” ends this package with great 303 lines definitely burning up the house! a limited and numbered edition of 200, after that it’s gone, no represses, no digital, so you know what to do!

the olympos series paused briefly, but now makes a welcome return thanks to the efforts of hermes, the messenger of the gods. whether he produced the tracks himself or they were ghostwritten is unclear, but they re a fantastic addition to the greek mythology focused minimal electronica label. astraia is a twinkling delight of mournful deep techno, while eidolon heads into introspective minimal electro territory with some seriously crafty beat programming. stasis meanwhile strikes a warm, laid back note that harks back to early uk techno might the track title be a tribute? the record closes out on phone, a grainy, sullen jam with some crunchy broken beats and plenty of needlepoint sound design going on.

if there s one thing wolf music know a thing or two about, it s house music. so its no surprise then that they ve decided to reissue a golden 2003 deep house nugget in the form of brs (british rhythm services) spring dom. reissued from the original dat tapes spring dom is one of those timeless records that even 15 years on sounds as soulful as it did when it first hit the racks. echoed sweeping stabs, chunky drum loops and powerful synth flurries alongside those mesmerising vocal refrains, all tied together with a driving bassline - this is deep, deep goodness of the highest degree. reworking spring dom for the present day, wolf mainstay medlar provides a rave tinged remix, chopping the vocals and reworking the synth lines to give it a peak time, dancefloor demeanour. the flip houses the other two tracks from the original 03 release - clubtronic with it s ukg flavoured beat, m1 pads and jazzy free flowing melodies and miss you combining a bumping groove, dynamic bass melody and stirring rhodes chords. a much-welcomed reissue package from the wolf camp and a chance to own this house treasure without feeding the sharks.

pal joey (aka joseph longo) came up in the heady days of new york street culture, amidst b-boying, boom boxes and an unusually entrepreneurial spirit of beat-making. beginning with crude “pause tapes”, he was soon making tracks with drum machines and sampled vocals, all painstakingly assembled with razors and reel-to-reel. working at vinylmania, where larry levan might be found shopping for records in his pajamas, helped joey’s entrance into the city’s nascent house music scene, and he was soon working with everyone from krs-one to sade to the orb, whose “little fluffy clouds” he tweaked for stateside tastes.
